RBI: Faster Cheque Clearing Starts October 2025, Moving to Real-Time Settlement
The RBI will introduce continuous cheque clearing on October 4, 2025, speeding up processing. Cheques will be scanned and cleared within hours instead of up to two days. Banks must confirm cheques by 7 PM during Phase 1. Phase 2, starting January 3, 2026, sets a three-hour confirmation deadline. Unconfirmed cheques will be deemed approved. Presenting banks must release payments within one hour of settlement. Banks are directed to inform customers of the changes.
