Is the world map we use today real? Mercator's map, created in 1569, has straight lines for true north-south and east-west directions. It was designed to help sailors navigate oceans but incorrectly shows land sizes. For example, Greenland seems equal to Africa, but Africa is much larger. The Gall-Peters map, made in 1855, accurately portrays land areas.
